Asian countries begin to restict garbage imports from the West | DW News
A number of countries around Asia have earned money by recycling plastics and electronic waste from wealthy countries in the West. But the load of garbage has become overwhelming for some. In Malaysia, the volume of plastic imports has tripled over the past few years, reaching 870,000 tons last year. Now Malaysia has joined a chorus of states saying they refuse to become a dumping ground for richer nations. The government plans to accept no more plastic waste imports, following China, which halted imports of plastic waste in 2017.

China's Waste Ban Is Causing A Trash Crisis In The U.S. (HBO)
China imports more recyclable goods than any other country in the world. But earlier this year, China stopped accepting a long list of imported plastic and paper waste, and implemented much stricter guidelines for what it's willing to take in.
The dramatic policy change is part of a national campaign to reduce the country’s carbon footprint, but China's decision to no longer be the trash collector for the rest of the world is causing major problems for U.S. waste processing operations.
Across the U.S., recyclers had been accustomed to sending major portions of their paper and plastic to China, but now they're scrambling to find other takers.
Already, more than a dozen states have started to giving companies waivers to throw out recyclables, including Massachusetts, where more than 4,000...

UK plastic for “recycling” dumped and burned in Turkey - BBC News
A BBC investigation has found that plastic waste from Britain that's supposed to be recycled in Turkey is instead being dumped there with some of it burned.
The UK exports more waste plastic to Turkey than to any other country. Environmentalists say Turkey can't even recycle its own waste and should not be importing more.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Angus Crawford.

Plug the Leak - what's wrong with plastic waste exports?
A lot of consumer plastic waste sorted for recycling often gets shipped to other countries instead. There are many issues behind shipping plastic waste, this explainer focuses on 3 critical problems. It draws from the experience of 3 countries, namely, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Turkey in dealing with legacy plastic waste - the build-up of plastic waste over years, shipped in from other countries, and dumped on developing countries with poor waste management infrastructure.

Ban EU Plastic Waste Exports: #BreakFreeFromPlastic petition
Trilogue negotiations for the revision of the Waste Shipment Regulation are currently underway. In light of this, Rethink Plastic alliance and the #BreakFreeFromPlastic movement are calling on the EU Commission, Parliament and Council to aim for ambitious legislation when revising the Waste Shipment Regulation, this includes a ban on all plastic waste exports to non-OECD and OECD countries outside of the Union and EFTA, and to put in additional safeguarding policies for intra-EU shipments of plastic waste (including the full transposition of the Basel Convention internally).
With the support of Eko and WeMove, we are raising the alarm on the harm brought about by the EU plastic waste trade through our joint petition, demanding an end to EU plastic waste exports.

Trashion: The stealth export of waste plastic clothes to Kenya
This documentary exposes the hidden export of plastic waste to the Global South, fuelled by the growing production of cheap, synthetic clothing made by brands in the Global North.
Despite restrictions on plastic waste export around the world, an overwhelming volume of used-clothing shipped to Kenya is waste synthetic clothing, a toxic influx which is creating devastating consequences for the environment and communities.
Our estimates suggest that in recent years over 300 million items of damaged or unsellable clothing made of synthetic – or plastic – fibres are exported to Kenya each year where they end up dumped, landfilled or burned, exacerbating the plastic pollution crisis.
